living better electrically
Written on February 8, 2008 by eric
Steph and I got up early this morning to meet with an electrician about replacing the house’s ancient and totally inadequate knob-and-tube electrical system with something that meets modern standards for safety and capacity. You would not believe the excessive standards that electrical work has to be done to nowadays to meet code. Not just an outlet for every twelve feet of wall, within six feet of every door or fireplace, but six circuits for the kitchen alone, hardwired smoke detectors in every room that has a ceiling light, no pull chains allowed on any lights, motion sensor lights at every exterior door, dimmer switches for any incandescents in the bathroom, and on and on.
Meanwhile, the sellers have followed through on removing a bunch of the junk that had been left in the garage, but there is still a pile of tires and a bunch of random wood. Anybody want some tires?
And then before heading off to work I walked over to Gaylord’s and got a cup of coffee and a croissant because, to my everlasting relief, this is the sort of neighborhood where walking over and getting a cup of coffee is a totally reasonable thing to do.
